Biosolids Dryer Facility

Biosolids Dryer Facility

As a subconsultant to NEFCO and Daniel O’Connell’s Sons, Wade Trim was part of the lead design team for a new Biosolids Dryer Facility at the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) in Detroit. The $680 million design-build-operate-maintain contract will improve solids handling to the plant with a wet weather treatment capacity of 1.7 billion gallons per day over the 23-year contract period. Wade Trim assisted with project management; performed civil/site, sludge pump/force main and structural foundation design; led the complex permitting process and provided resident construction engineering and QA/QC inspection services.

Two new sludge feed pumps deliver blended liquid sludge to eight sludge grinders and eight dewatering centrifuges in the new facility located across the street from the WRRF. The centrifuges work in pairs to discharge dewatered biosolids to a cake bin before further mixing and feeding into one of four dryer trains. The Class A finished product is stored in silos and transported by truck for use as fertilizer by farming communities or potentially as a fuel source for furnaces or cement kilns. The facility is capable of processing up to 420 dry tons of sludge per day.
