Seeking to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs, the City of Rockwood, MI, contracted with Wade Trim for operation and maintenance (O&M) of their wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) over the next five years. The plant treats 300,000 gallons of wastewater per day for approximately 3,300 residents, but can treat up to 1 million gallons per day. As part of daily operation and maintenance activities, Wade Trim’s certified resident operators routinely monitor influent and effluent flows, take water samples, clean the bar screen, and remove sludge.
Immediate improvements have included streamlining the analysis of water samples by using a local laboratory instead of an out-of-state laboratory, and implementing a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to keep operators attuned to any preventive maintenance or updates needed. In addition, Wade Trim recently purchased a Spectrophotometer that is used to test more than 70 chemicals and properties, including ammonia, chemical oxygen demand (COD), mercury, and phosphorous. At the Rockwood WWTP, we are using the equipment in-house to test ammonia and phosphorous levels in compliance with Michigan Department of Environmental Quality regulations, and at a cost savings versus outsourcing for wastewater analysis.
