City of Milan Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants
A need to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs led the City of Milan to contract the operation and maintenance of their water and wastewater treatment facilities to Wade Trim in 2007. Increased efficiency in labor and chemical and power consumption, as well as implementation of a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to reduce equipment downtime and corrective repair expenses have generated significant savings.
Preventive maintenance activities have helped protect the City’s assets and keep their systems in good working order. At the Wastewater Treatment Plant, clarifier effluent weirs are being cleaned regularly to reduce fouling of the plant’s Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection system and prolong UV bulb life. Hydrant flushing and maintenance activities are being performed to ensure fire protection and optimum water quality resulting in fewer customer complaints and a lower insurance rating.
An asset management program was implemented for their systems to better manage capital assets. In addition, a water and sewer rate study was completed to address the need to increase revenue and better manage the flow of funds between the general fund and the water and sewer fund. Wade Trim also acts as a liaison for MDEQ compliance for these facilities by completing activities for the City’s Industrial Pretreatment Program, Mercury Minimization Plan, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.
