The City of Venice’s Evaluation and Appraisal Report (EAR) received the
Distinguished Project Award from the Suncoast Section of the Florida Chapter of
the American Planning Association (FAPA) in November of 2005. The Suncoast Section of
FAPA consists of local planners, architects, city and county officials, and others
involved in planning in the Florida counties of Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Manatee,
Pasco, Pinellas, and Sarasota. This award recognizes an outstanding project or development
that was completed within the last two years that greatly contributes to the planning profession.
Wade Trim has been working with the City during the past year to prepare its
EAR as required by Florida’s Growth Management Act. The EAR is the primary data
and analysis report used to inform forthcoming amendments to the City’s Comprehensive
Plan. The City’s EAR process included a significant community visioning exercise called
"Envision Venice," which consisted of public forums, eight Venice High
School student preference surveys, and a scoping meeting involving approximately
ten regional agencies. Additionally, the EAR contained an evaluation of the City’s
planning practices and outcomes over the past seven years displayed graphically
through tables, charts, diagrams, contextual maps, and photos. The results of the
EAR are provided in four volumes, with the first volume condensing the information
into eight critical issues regarding land use and growth management in the City of Venice.
