Taylor’s new Midtown Fire Station and 23rd District Courthouse were recently
completed as part of the City’s municipal complex improvements project. In addition to the new
buildings, existing facilities were remodeled and the municipal parking lot was
expanded. Wade Trim teamed up with Walbridge Aldinger and Redstone Architects
for this design/build project.
The Midtown Fire Station features five bays for fire response and emergency
vehicles. The two-story, 30,000-square-foot facility serves as the fire station
headquarters and one of three stations in the City. It also houses all Fire
Department administrative staff. It replaces the former Pine Street Fire Station
that is the original DPW building and the oldest publicly-owned building in the
City. The building will be remodeled to house the volunteer Auxiliary Police and
provide storage.
The Michigan 23rd District Court is a two-story, 32,000-square-foot courthouse.
With three courtrooms, jury rooms and prosecutor work rooms, the facility enables
judges and staff to better handle their large caseload. A dedicated, secure, fenced
walkway is also provided to transfer prisoners from the existing police station to
the courthouse. The old courthouse will be remodeled as a City office.
The design/build process brings many advantages to a project: a single point of
professional responsibility is provided, higher quality can be achieved with design
and construction professionals on the same team, and the construction team can assist
in constructibility reviews of design drawings. Overall costs can be reduced since project
costs are confirmed earlier in the design/build process and the burden of administering contracts
is reduced. The design/build process also allows for a shortened project schedule since
construction can begin while plans are still being completed.
