Residents and officials celebrated the completion of the Huron Regional Water Authority (HRWA) Water Treatment
Plant with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on January 27, 2006. The water
treatment plant serves current customers in the Village of Port Austin, Port Austin Township and the City of Bad Axe. As part of
the project, 17 miles of pipeline and three booster stations were installed to
connect the water treatment plant in Port Austin with Bad Axe’s water system.
The total project cost was $13.43 million.
Located in downtown Port Austin, the water treatment plant sits on a
15,600-square-foot site that is surrounded by a
community park and private property. The plant features microfiltration technology
and infrastructure for raw water supply, pumping, disinfection, storage, laboratory
and administrative facilities. With an initial capacity of 1.9 MGD, the plant will
be expandable to 3.8 MGD to meet future needs and service area growth. Improvements will promote long-term
compliance with current and future drinking water regulations. The microfiltration
system will ensure compliance with the Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule by
providing an enhanced barrier to Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium and other potential
chlorine-resistant pathogens.
Wade Trim provided conceptual, design, and construction phase engineering services
for the project. In addition, HRWA hired Wade Trim’s
Operations Services Group to provide full-contract operation, maintenance and
management of the new facility. Wade Trim also operates, maintains and manages the
wastewater facilities owned by the Port Austin Area Sewer and Water Authority.
