Reconstruction of the mile-long segment of Maplewood Avenue between Harrison and
Henry Ruff Roads has improved the ride for Garden City residents and visitors. The
previous boulevard pavement consisted of two 19- to 20-foot-wide concrete lanes, with
curb and gutter, separated by a grassy median. The new street consists of two 22-foot-wide
concrete lanes with integral curb and gutter, with a slightly narrower grassy median.
The $2.7 million project also included storm sewer improvements, replacement of one mile
of existing water main, and new sidewalks and landscaping.
A major east-west corridor, this heavily-used roadway has many residential properties,
elementary schools on both ends, and the City high school in the center. Wade Trim
worked closely with City staff, other stakeholders and existing utilities to coordinate
reconstruction efforts, minimize disruption, and keep the City and public informed
of the project’s progress. Wade Trim provided design, bidding and contract award
assistance, and construction phase engineering and project management services for Phase I.
Phase II consists of reconstructing an additional half mile of Maplewood Avenue on
each end of the Phase I Project. With an estimated $3.5 million project cost and
$980,000 in grant funding, the Phase II reconstruction is currently under design,
with construction planned in 2007.
