Paving Project Receives National Recognition

Howard Road

Three Rivers Road

The Gladwin County Road Commissions Howard and Three Rivers Roads paving project in Buckeye and Hay Townships has been recognized for paving excellence on the state and national levels. The project received an Award of Merit in the category of 2,500 to 20,000 tons from the Asphalt Pavement Association of Michigan/Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and a Quality in Construction Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association. Projects are judged by appearance, ride, texture uniformity, longitudinal and transverse joints, edges, approaches, and degree of difficulty.

Road grade and drainage work completed over a year in advance of paving helped achieve superior ride quality. Roadbeds compacted naturally under a complete climate cycle and the road grade width was established. This enabled the contractor, Rieth-Riley Construction Company/Houghton Lake Division, to complete paving operations in 2006 under ideal summer climate conditions.

Wade Trim performed the design and construction engineering, including inspection and testing of the paving operation per MDOT standards. An excellent working relationship between the Road Commission, the contractor’s seasoned paving crew, and our on-site engineer contributed to the project being completed under budget and two weeks ahead of schedule.
