Redford’s Award-Winning Future City Students Assisted by Wade Trim

Presenters at the Michigan Regional Future City Competition

For the ninth consecutive year, Wade Trim professional engineers, Dan Brooks and Lori Pawlik, volunteered to mentor Redford Township’s St. Valentine students in the Michigan Regional Future City Competition. The student team placed fourth in the 2007 competition.

The competition calls for seventh and eighth grade student teams, assisted by a teacher and a volunteer engineer, to design a city of the future using SimCity3000TM. Teams also are required to write an abstract and essay describing their city, and build a scale model of a section of their city using recycled materials.

Built in 2689, the students’ city, Aurelium, is in Australia along the Indian ocean coastline. The city features a hover craft airway system, non-polluting fuel cells for energy, and smart homes. Smart housing units include underground safe houses, automatic locks, temperature-controlled rooms, and separate trash, mail, and recycling tubes that run throughout the city.
