Roadway improvements, like the rebuilding of Dequindre and Nagel Streets, are helping the City
of Hamtramck spur economic development and strengthen its community. Reconstruction of these I-75
service drives complemented the Michigan Department of Transportation’s program to reconstruct
bridges and overpasses along the I-75 corridor. With 80% of project funding secured from the
Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) Safety Transportation Program and 20% matching
funds from Governor Granholm’s Local Jobs Today initiative, this project marks the first time
in state history that the state provided necessary matching funds to leverage federal funds to
complete local road projects.
The new, wider concrete roadways improve safety and maneuverability for residential and commuting
traffic. New storm sewers will alleviate drainage issues and new sidewalk is also included. Along
with design plans and specifications, Wade Trim prepared the programming application, and provided
design and construction administration, engineering and inspection. Wayne County and the Michigan
Municipal League were also involved in the process to secure funds for this project.
