Van Buren Force Main and Equalization Basin   Van Buren Force Main and Equalization Basin
Balancing flows between available capacity in three separate regional sewer systems is easier for Van Buren Township now that they have a new force main, pumping station and equalization basin. The Township constructed the award-winning project to better manage sewage flows during wet weather and protect downstream areas from potential overflows. The 1.3-mg equalization basin is covered by earth and features green storm water management practices including a bioswale and storm water reuse to flush the basin. Designed with the future in mind, the basin can easily be expanded to double its capacity at minimal cost. Three miles of 16-inch force main were designed and constructed through urban and environmentally-sensitive areas to deliver sewer flows to the basin.
Walnut Lake Pump Station Reconstruction   Walnut Lake Pump Station Reconstruction
A new pump station and force main have enabled the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office to maximize use of existing wet weather facilities and balance flows within the Evergreen and Farmington Interceptors. The innovative solution reduces sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) by "swapping flows" in a downstream interceptor. Additional combined sewer flow is held in three CSO RTB control facilities (with excess capacity) allowing for room to carry the SSO flow. Once the SSO is over, the stored CSO flow is discharged back to the interceptor. A unique pumping scheme enables the pump station to lift flows under differing head conditions to west and eastbound force mains. Horizontal directional drilling enabled force main construction in sensitive areas and reduced costs.
