Rooted in the lumber and railroad heritage of the Village of Kingsley, MI, Brownson Memorial Park is located on 2.4 acres of land gifted by the Brownson family in the 1960s. The park’s typical amenities have long been enjoyed by residents and visitors, and numerous Village events and community gatherings have been hosted. To expand the park’s amenities, improve circulation, and provide accessibility for all, Wade Trim provided design, staking, and construction administration services for various park additions and improvements.
Major design elements include an improved splash pad with water channel, playground, multi-sensory and ADA-friendly structures, and outdoor fitness stations. An ornamental fence delineates the park’s bounds, following the curvilinear walkways which lead to various leisure opportunities. Contrasting hardscape materials help define paths and spaces, converging at an art sculpture that functions as a focal point and wayfinding piece, building on the park’s identity. Infrastructure was updated to accommodate local events, including the Kingsley Farmers Market. Mature trees were preserved to maintain the comfort of shade and new landscaping was added.
The Village held several public input sessions to gather park ideas and wants from the community. A public hearing was held which helped successfully acquire a $1-million grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation Public Gathering Spaces Initiative. This multi-generational park improvement project was also financially supported by the local Rotary Club and Kingsley Downtown Development Authority.
