Sustainability

Infrastructure investments are maximized when sustainability is considered throughout design. The economic, social, and environmental implications of sewer, water, stormwater, road, and energy projects are important today and decades from now. Our engineers, landscape architects, and planners work with clients to incorporate sustainable solutions into infrastructure we use daily to improve quality of life. Climate change, resiliency, and energy efficiency go hand-in-hand with sustainability. Results can be achieved in many ways – facility operation and maintenance upgrades that reduce long-term energy consumption, specifying construction materials that are recycled or locally sourced, stormwater control that uses rain gardens and bioswales to provide treatment, and healthy streets that improve the human experience for all users.

Sustainability goals are unique to each project and client. We are active in professional and project certification programs our clients use to pursue their environmental and business goals:

  • Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (Envision®)
  • Envirocert National Green Infrastructure Certification Program (NGICP®)
  • USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®)

We believe sustainable practices apply to all businesses including our own. Our internal sustainability program focuses on improving our balance of resource consumption with impacts on the environment. We actively educate employees about the environmental, social, and economic impacts of their consumption habits while providing meaningful, actionable solutions for behavior change. Our sustainable business practices include recycling, stewardship activities, and a hybrid work schedule that has decreased our emissions from travel, paper waste, and energy consumption. Metrics on our Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 Emissions, as defined by the US Environmental Protection Agency, are tracked annually to gain insight about how our company is succeeding and where we can further improve.
