As Wade Trim celebrates its centennial anniversary, we remember the many people that helped create who we are today. Our clients and employees have filled 100 years with challenging projects, memorable accomplishments, and inspiring achievements.

This page will be updated throughout the year to share our defining moments and featured projects.

DEFINING MOMENTS

Significant events have shaped Wade Trim throughout history and made us who we are today. Some are related to specific projects and others are a result of the times we lived in. We will be sharing eight stories that have impacted who we are today. The first two were written by Bob Wade and Don Trim 25 years ago. We have added follow-up comments to update them. The remaining stories are about more recent events.

City of Tampa, Harbour Island Force Main Replacement

Harbour Island Force Main Replacement DB

Under a progressive design-build contract, Kimmins and Wade Trim replaced 2.3 miles of sanitary force main while minimizing impacts to Harbour Island residents, commercial properties, Port Tampa Bay, and local tourism. Eight trenchless installations were designed including a world-class microtunnel. The 3,200-LF subaqueous crossing of the Ybor Turning Basin, the longest, continuous, 78-inch steel casing microtunnel completed in the Western Hemisphere, shortened the pipeline route and minimized impacts on residents and businesses.

City of Fort Lauderdale, George T. Lohmeyer WWTP Redundant Effluent Force Main

To provide a crucial backup system for managing wastewater, the City of Fort Lauderdale is installing 4,000 LF of 60-inch-diameter, redundant, effluent force main from its George T. Lohmeyer WWTP to the City’s deep injection wells site. As Design-Build Lead Engineer with Prime Contractor Ric-Man Construction Florida, Wade Trim is providing hydraulic modeling, design, permitting, and construction administration for the project. The route is along a main arterial for Port Everglades and the Brevard County Convention Center that is congested with utilities, contains contaminated soils and groundwater, and needs to accommodate concrete piers for a future elevated rail system.

GLWA Biosolids Dryer Facility

Biosolids Dryer Facility Design-Build-Operate

As a subconsultant to NEFCO and Daniel O’Connell’s Sons, Wade Trim was part of the lead design team for a new Biosolids Dryer Facility at the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF) in Detroit. The $680-million, design-build-operate-maintain contract will improve solids handling to the plant with a wet weather treatment capacity of 1.7 billion gallons per day over the 23-year contract period. Wade Trim assisted with project management; performed civil/site, sludge pump/force main and structural foundation design; led the complex permitting process and provided resident construction engineering and QA/QC inspection services.

City of Flint, Riverfront Restoration Plan

Flint Riverfront Restoration Plan

The Flint Riverfront Restoration Plan established a bold vision for re-imagining Flint’s obsolete and under-utilized riverfront and adjacent areas. Through careful planning, the vision has been brought to life with the enhancement of water-based recreation, improvement of stormwater and flood control, restoration of ecosystems, and strengthening of community connectivity. The plan unites several parks into a cohesive corridor that is central to the new state park in Flint.

Re-Envision Redford 2040 Comprehensive Master Plan

Re-Envision Redford Master Plan

Navigating the challenges of declining population and property tax revenue, the Redford Township Planning Commission, Master Plan Steering Committee, and Wade Trim developed the Re-Envision Redford 2040 Comprehensive Master Plan. The plan aims to improve the quality of life for residents and lays the groundwork for a more connected, resilient, and sustainable future. Extensive public input was gathered to identify community priorities and a trackable project matrix was developed to help secure funding for high priority projects.

Dunedin CRA Master Plan and Downtown/Waterfront Illustrative Corridor Plan

Highly regarded as one of the most walkable coastal towns in Tampa Bay, the City of Dunedin worked with Wade Trim to evaluate and revamp its 15-year Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Master Plan. Gathering input from numerous stakeholders helped to identify areas to improve. The plan aimed to create greater connectivity between the downtown area and waterfront corridor. Adopted in 2010, the plan resulted in significant community reinvestment that continues to be regionally recognized.

Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, Irishtown Bend Stabilization and Rehabilitation Project

Irishtown Bend Hillside Stabilization and Rehabilitation

The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority (CCCPA) completed a $60-million project to stabilize the Franklin Hill/Irishtown Bend hillside along the Cuyahoga River to prevent maritime traffic interruptions in the channel. Serving as CCCPA’s Owner’s Representative, Wade Trim provided full construction management and inspection services throughout the 30-month construction period. Major excavation work was undertaken and a new riverfront bulkhead wall and storm sewers were installed.

City of Omaha, Saddle Creek High Rate Treatment Basin

Saddle Creek High Rate Treatment Basin

After designing the City of Omaha’s 160-MGD Saddle Creek Retention Treatment Basin, Wade Trim led the Construction Management Team using a two-phased approach to address challenges and reduce risk. Serving as the City’s Owner’s Representative, Wade Trim provided full construction management and inspection services. The $95-million project was constructed within a very tight and complicated former landfill site. Extensive support of excavation and deep foundation support systems were needed to address soil conditions and support the underground, reinforced concrete structure.

City of Atlanta, Sugar Creek Trunk Sewer Upgrades

Sugar Creek Trunk Sewer Upgrades

The City of Atlanta replaced nearly 5 miles of outfall sewers in the Sugar Creek Basin Outfall system through a $90-million, progressive design-build project. As part of a joint-venture team, Wade Trim provided construction management services for installation of 24- to 72-inch-diameter pipes through open cut, pipe bursting, CIPP, micro-tunneling, and jack and bore methods. The project was fast-tracked to meet its federally mandated completion date requiring demanding staff hours and scheduling.

Karegnondi Water Authority, Water Supply Program

KWA Water Supply Program Management

The Karegnondi Water Authority (KWA) constructed a $262-million water supply system that spans 63 miles in mid-Michigan. To meet an aggressive 4-year schedule, the project was divided into 7 design and construction contracts and a highly structured approach was used to establish consistency from design through construction. As a Program Management Team Partner, Wade Trim managed and coordinated seven design and construction contracts. Wade Trim also designed a 12-mile segment of 60-inch transmission main.

Florida Keys Water Transmission Main Replacement

To strengthen the resiliency and reliability of water transmission main, the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority has embarked on a long-term program to replace aging pipe with corrosion-resistant steel pipe along the entire 130-mile system. Wade Trim has provided design and/or construction inspection services for early segments through Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Knights Key, Plantation Key, and Windley Key.

City of St. Petersburg, Cosme Water Treatment Plant

Cosme Water Treatment Plant Upgrade and Expansion

Comprehensive improvements at the Cosme Water Treatment Plant in St. Petersburg, FL, are underway as a progressive design-build project. As lead designer, Wade Trim is focused on operational, electrical, and SCADA system improvements to modernize and optimize the 50-MGD conventional lime softening facility, which is the city’s sole source of potable water. Replacement of the high service pumps will bring long-term operational efficiencies and the ability to meet future increased demands of the City’s water distribution system. The project also includes a new Emergency Operations Center to house operations staff during major storm events.

Oakland County Parks and Recreation Improvements

Oakland County Parks and Recreation Improvements

As part of a 5-Year Parks and Recreation Master Plan for Oakland County, MI, Wade Trim provided landscape-focused redesign for two community parks to improve amenities, play spaces, accessibility, parking capacity, and stormwater management. Updates to aging infrastructure at the 17-acre Oak Park Woods include a nature-themed playground, new restrooms, trails, and restoration of natural features. At 163 acres, Red Oaks Park is a community recreation hub. Park amenities were expanded with climbing structures, a rolling playscape, a bridge crossing, and sledding hill improvements with accessible paths, slides, and a sloping climbing wall.

City of Detroit Riverside Park

Riverside Park Improvements

Redevelopment of Riverside Park helped revitalize Detroit’s Riverfront with a functional, attractive, and sustainable recreational space for residents and visitors. Wade Trim designed hardscape finishes, parking, sidewalks, site furniture, ADA access, and stormwater drainage and flood control with park users in mind. Working within a former industrial brownfield site, the redevelopment and construction had to address contaminated soils to protect park users. Pavements, landscaping, and drainage solutions were selected for durability and long-term maintenance, creating a park that is both enjoyable and resilient.

City of Flint, Chevy Commons Redevelopment

Chevy Commons Redevelopment

As one of the three major pieces to restore Flint’s riverfront, Wade Trim transformed the former 60-acre Chevrolet manufacturing plant into a community destination spot. The plan provided the City and stakeholders with a blueprint for converting the brownfield zone into a green space. Redeveloped in five phases, the park-like area features open grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands interlaced with trails that link to surrounding institutions, neighborhoods, and regional trails. The team successfully preserved the history and character of the space, while engaging and integrating the community throughout the process.

MDOT US-24 Renewal and Diverging Diamond Interchange

US-24/M-102 Diverging Diamond Interchange

The Michigan Department of Transportation’s first diverging diamond interchange (DDI) to connect two trunkline roads was designed to fit the site’s tight right-of-way constraints and accommodate larger vehicles and slower speeds. Implementation of the DDI has significantly improved safety and efficiency by providing a consistent driving pattern for all entrance and exit ramps and eliminating left turn and merging conflicts.

Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle Park

Second only to Niagara Falls as the most visited US state park, Belle Isle is a historic island park located in the Detroit River and operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Wade Trim’s Multimodal Mobility Study collected extensive data to determine existing conditions including a unique application of aerial photography and observations. Transformational changes are proposed to enhance visitor access and travel through transportation, parking, and traffic management improvements. Wade Trim is currently leading development of a 10-year strategic plan to enhance the visitor experience while restoring park structures and sites through a phased, sustainable approach.

MDOT, Telegraph Road Corridor Improvements

Telegraph Road Corridor Improvements

Over the past 30 years, Wade Trim has been actively involved in design and construction of improvements to Telegraph Road, a major corridor in southeast Michigan. Designing 15 miles of improvements through six communities for this Michigan Department of Transportation roadway has demonstrated our ability to deliver urban arterial boulevard rehabilitation/reconstruction projects at the highest level and showcases our expertise in boulevard corridor operations.

Espanola Way Conversion

A $2.5-million revitalization project preserved and enhanced the City of Miami Beach’s iconic Española Way as a unique commercial area. The block was converted to a permanent pedestrian mall with Wade Trim’s landscape architecture, engineering design, permitting, and construction management services. The streetscape design maintained the historic Mediterranean feel of this quintessential space for locals and visitors.

Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College Landscape Improvements

Since 2013, Wade Trim has been providing landscape architecture services to plan and improve landscaping for this 32-acre, urban campus in downtown Lansing, MI. Over a dozen projects have been completed for the overall campus and specific sites to create an environment that reflects the campus community and improves accessibility for students, faculty, and visitors.

Belle Isle Park

Belle Isle Strategic Plan

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget is spearheading the development of a 10-year strategic plan for Belle Isle Park, a historic 982-acre island park located in the Detroit River. The plan aims to enhance the visitor experience while restoring park structures and sites through a phased, sustainable approach. Wade Trim is leading the plan’s development, leveraging extensive background data and studies completed over the past decade by various organizations and firms.
