Lansing Community College

Lansing Community College has used a multi-faceted approach to increase the aesthetic appeal of its downtown campus while enhancing its sense of place. To address the lack of unifying design features, Wade Trim conducted a baseline campus urban design assessment that led to several urban design interventions that have brought uniformity and lushness to the campus. To create functional outdoor spaces in Michigan’s four-season climate and reduce stormwater flows, a deciduous and coniferous tree survey was completed, followed by a comprehensive tree planting program on the nine-block campus. Additional improvements range from streetscapes, building entrances, plazas, and a pedestrian mall, all of which incorporated new lighting, hardscape enhancements, extensive landscape plantings, campus beautification, and improved accessibility. To further placemaking efforts, Wade Trim has assisted with the art installation program to incorporate pieces created by various local artists and fabricators into the campus-wide plan. Wade Trim’s campus planning and urban design efforts over the past 7 years have significantly enhanced Lansing Community College’s campus as an asset within downtown Lansing.
