As-Needed Traffic Signal Design Services

As-Needed Traffic Signal Design Services

To keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) utilizes Signal Design Services contracts to modernize its signal infrastructure and respond to increases in population and development that precipitate changing traffic patterns. Our traffic engineering teams provide comprehensive traffic signal design services under standalone and as-needed contracts, assisting MDOT with single intersection projects, groupings of multiple signal upgrades, and large-scale corridor improvements.

Work scopes range from upgrades such as box span and mast arm layout design, new signal infrastructure, implementation of LED vehicle and pedestrian signal heads to installing advanced vehicle detection systems such as video cameras and radar. We also upgrade pedestrian signals and sidewalk ramps to meet federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance standards. Additionally, we keep up with the evolving transportation market to support the integration of new technologies, incorporate updates in standard transportation design, and meet MDOT and regulatory requirements.

In each effort, we coordinate with MDOT, local agencies, utility providers, and other stakeholders from initial studies through design, construction document preparation, and cost estimating to help fortify Michigan’s transportation network. We also provide additional engineering support during construction as needed.
