Sanitary sewer improvements underway in Cleveland Heights will eliminate four sanitary sewer overflows (SSO) in a high traffic neighborhood to better protect public health and the environment. Working under an Integrated Overflow Control Master Plan (IOCMP), the City has prioritized SSO control as the most critical improvements needed to reduce the risk of basement backups and comply with Clean Water Act requirements. These Tier 1 projects are phased over 15 years to balance affordable cost with financial capability. Wade Trim has been working with the City for the past 8 years to inspect and study their system, and recommend and design cost-effective improvements that will address USEPA requirements.

The four SSOs will be controlled by a design that redirects SSO flows to an existing 21-inch sanitary sewer in Cumberland Road that has significant spare capacity. SSOs CH-28 and CH-26 in Euclid Heights Boulevard will be redirected to a new 21-inch sanitary sewer to be constructed by Cleveland Heights in Euclid Heights Boulevard from Lee Road to Cumberland Road where it will discharge to the existing sanitary sewer in Cumberland Road. SSO flows from SSO CH-17, located along Cumberland Road, will also be redirected to the same existing sewer. SSO CH-25, located at Cumberland and Somerton Roads, will be controlled by the other proposed flow redirections. This project will also repair a collapsed storm sewer found during the City’s Sewer System Evaluation Survey.

Construction of the improvements began in August 2023 and is scheduled to be complete in November 2023. Wade Trim is providing construction observation and administration services, leading construction meetings, coordinating with the City and Contractor, and reviewing and approving shop drawings and pay applications. Wade Trim’s resident observer is coordinating with the contractor, reviewing quantities, coordinating with the residents and property owners, documenting the construction process, and completing daily construction logs.
