The American Water Works Association (AWWA) annually recognizes one person among its over 51,000 members who has advanced the organization through his or her volunteer time and effort and supported AWWA staff. This year, AWWA honored Mark Coleman, a Senior Project Manager in our Detroit office, with their 2020 Volunteer of the Year Award, in recognition of his involvement with a variety of AWWA staff groups and longtime service to the association. In lieu of an announcement at the canceled June AWWA Annual Conference and Exhibition, Mark was profiled in a Connections newsletter article.

An AWWA Life Member, Mark has held a wide variety of roles at both the Association and Michigan Section AWWA levels. Most recently, he served as an Association Vice President, Michigan Section Director, and AWWA Executive Committee and Board member. He is also proud of his work on the Management and Leadership Division as a Trustee and member of the Standards Council. He has been a part of or lead on various Board Ad Hoc Committees, such as the Strategic Plan Update and By-Laws Modification, and was the Board’s representative on its Canadian Affairs Committee.

Mark built his career planning, designing, and constructing water, wastewater, and stormwater projects for municipalities and utilities. He has served more than 40 years at Wade Trim in various leadership roles on a wide range of water resources projects in Detroit, Wayne and Genesee Counties, Pittsburgh, Omaha, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and New York.
